Happy International Women’s Day everyone!
International Women’s Day is important to me for many reasons. The most significant being simply because women’s rights are important.
I am a feminist.
And no, that does not mean that I dislike men.
It just means that I think that women should be treated the same as them. So in my mind, if you have a mother, a sister, a girlfriend, a wife – you too should be a feminist. You see where I’m going with this, right? In the words of John Legend, “all men should be feminists, if men cared about women’s rights, the world would be a better place.”
It should be no surprise to anyone that historically, women have occupied an oppressed role in society. And while I do think that in recent years there have been monumental steps taken to right the scale, there is still work to be done.
One positive change that I would like to highlight today, on National Women’s Day, is the social change. With the spotlight through social activism being so heavily focused on the women’s movement, there has been a visible and tangible change in the way that our society views feminism. Being passionate about women’s rights is a source of pride for both the men and women of today.
This Lingua Franca custom sweater is a symbol of the women’s movement that I wear proudly. The brand Lingua Franca makes these rad, ethically sourced cashmere sweaters emblazoned (by hand!) with phrases from the resistance movement. My favorite thing about the brand is that they use their platform to not only empower women, but also to spark change. They donate a portion of their profits to organizations working to make this world a better place. And if that isn’t already the coolest thing out there, it gets better. You can pick from a list of organizations when you place a custom order! When I ordered this sweater, I chose for the portion of the profits being donated to a charity to go to The Women’s March.
Ok ok I’m sure I’ve made it abundantly clear that I am a big fan of the brand. But now onto the phrase that I chose.
This phrase isn’t one of the phrases it Lingua Franca offers on their line. Although they do offer some seriously bad ass phrases. I chose “like a girl” because it really resonates with me and everything going on in the women’s movement today. Growing up, I always remember the phrase “like a girl” having negative connotations. When someone told you that “you run like a girl” or “you fight like a girl” that was supposed to be a negative thing.
It was a diss.
But now when people say those exact same things it has the absolute opposite meaning. When someone tells me that I work like a girl, ski like a girl or love like a girl. I’m like: hell yeah I do, and you ain’t seen nothing yet.
