I am so excited to share this post today for two reasons – it is the first in my new Spotlight Series – on NYC Blogger Katie Sands of HonestlyKate. AND I’ve teamed up with Katie to do a Brinker & Lou giveaway! Head on over to instagram to get all of the details on the giveaway and read on to check out the full interview!
E: How did you launch @honestlykate? What motivated you to take the plunge?
K: I created HonestlyKate at the end of last year as a platform I could use to reflect my journey as a young woman in New York City. I know so many people in similar positions — and let’s face it, we all want to look good whether we’re on the subway, at a job interview, or just out for the night with our closest friends. From the beginning, it’s been my goal to inspire girls to curate their own futures and let them in on my fashion secrets along the way. What better place than New York to do it all?!
K: I try to always stay true to myself no matter what. Staying true to myself is basically my brand, but it can be hard not to get swept up by the glamor of it all especially as things grow and evolve. I think it’s key to have people in your life that really ground you and remind you of what’s important. I always remind myself of the core reasons of why I started to blog: my love for fashion and my passion for helping people be their truest selves. As long as you’re true to yourself and your mission, you will always be relevant no matter how saturated the industry you are in is. Also, being an “On Air” style expert for NBC and Fox has helped me expand my brand outside of just the blogosphere.
E: What is the most exciting project that you have worked on to date?
K: My first time on NBC as a style expert was definitely the most excited I have ever been work wise. I hope to continue hosting more tv segments 🙂
K: To be honest, I don’t feel like I’ve made it yet, but I’m so grateful for the community HonestlyKate has created and every day I look forward to what’s to come. There’s truly nothing better than hearing people respond to what you are saying and I love connecting with girls from all different areas of the world. / I think I will feel that moment when someone recognizes me in sweats on a Sunday hah!
E: How do you create and maintain and authentic connection to your followers?
K: I try to always engage with my followers whether it be on dm/email/in person. My favorite part about working in a social media world is being able to connect with people from around the world who have similar interests. It’s so important to me to consistently make myself a relatable figure in the fashion world.
E: What is the most important piece of advice you have ever been given when it comes to your career?
K: Everyone has been in your shoes. Of course, everyone gets nervous about being shut down but you have to remember that the worst anyone is going to say is “no.” Reaching out to other women in the industry, for example, has been by far the most rewarding part of starting HonestlyKate. One of my favorite quotes to live by is “if you want it, ask.” You’re not going to get anywhere if you never try.
E: How do you choose what brands you do and don’t work with?
K: When it comes to clothing, I’m always open to working with new brands. Trends are always changing so it’s fun to see what brands evolve with the change and which stick to their roots. I tend to choose brands over the team of people behind them. I will not say who, but I have boycotted one of my all time favorite brands because the owner was not nice. You never want to be associated with someone who has that reputation, especially in the work world.
When it comes to beauty brands, I always have to test out the product for at least a month before I agree to promoting/working with them in any way!
E: How do you stay true to your brand?
K: Just be yourself and have a clear vision. Of course, this vision can evolve, but it’s good to start with a direct message for your audience and have a good sense of what you want your brand to showcase. Don’t be afraid to take risks in your style. Don’t be threatened by numbers of followers. Stick to looking at your engagement and find the link between what you love and what your audience wants to see or hear from you.
