The countdown is here and it’s real. Today is the last day in 2015 – I know, I know — totally crazy. But nevertheless, it’s all happening. There are mere hours left before the champagne popping, sparkly hat wearing, celestial sunglass sporting madness is upon us. So let’s take a moment for ourselves and talk about sparkly clothes.
As it has been made abundantly clear (by yours truly) I have a thing for shimmer and shine this time of year. And this dress just gets me. This is a two birds one stone kind of look because not only does it make for a stellar NYE ensemble but it artfully doubles as THE black tie dress. It has faithfully gotten me through weddings and charity seasons feeling shiny and chic. So even though I think that NYE is overrated and the holiday and I are on a friendship time out — let’s have fun tonight and wear things like this.
The problem with New Year’s Eve is *clearly* not the clothes, it is that it cannot and will not possibly live up to the irrational cultural expectations. The expectation that this night will be the perfect storm of sequins, romance, old school glamour, nostalgia, and dizzying laughter and that this intoxicating cocktail will set the stage for our entire year.
Well come on now.
No wonder we all end up disappointed and cradling our hangovers on January first. NYE is a holiday that has been set up for failure by the impossibly high bar that we have willingly and repeatedly set for it. So let’s give the kid a break this year and just have fun – no expectations, no requirements, no disappointments.
Oh yeah, and I threw in the feathered mask because YOLO! It’s nearly 2016, people! Here’s to another year of sartorial shenanigans, sarcasm and culottes. Let’s do this.
